A Short Synopsis of My Experiences Traveling With
Agape in Action in Africa

By Sue Witton

Three months in Kenya. Where do I start, on what became the most amazing thing I have ever been able to do in my life. After being asked if I could go to Kenya to sew by Sis Jeannie Barton I never thought I would be able to, but God always provides a way. My husband Mark said yes and as the saying goes the rest is history.

sewing machinesPlanning got under way; what time to go, what to do, what to take you name is was on the agenda, I think I thought of this undertaking 24 hours a day. When talking about the trip with my good friend Bev, I asked if she could come with me. My answer: YES! So Bev and I put the word out we were after sewing machines, supplies etc. It poured in from everywhere, in the end we ended up with 7 machines, 4 electric and 3 we had converted into hand machines. So with our luggage packed with the most we were allowed and an extra 141kgs we set off on the 20th July 2009. Travelling via Qatar down into Kenya.

The adventure had really began when we couldn’t get our extra luggage out of customs even though it came with us as extra baggage. So having to catch our next flight down to Mombasa we left it in the hands of Robertson, not to see it for another week and 31,000 Shillings later. sewing team 1

Sewing lessons began in Mwandeo with two classes a day 9-12 and 2-5 with up to 20 each class. The program was to make a sewing bag, skirt, blouse, shopping bag and hand embroidery. All this was achieved over the next 5 ½ weeks. Remember that there is no power here so the hand machine became a God send.

Sadly we had to leave and go onto our next place, so with all our gear (less 3 machines) we headed to Kamakuywa stopping off and buying supplies on the way through Nairobi and Nukuru. We were met with 100 women! Here we had power and the electric machines were very much a novelty. Once again over the next 5 ½ weeks the same program was achieved, only this time the fabric was all the same. The locals thought a new school had started up for mothers. Our lessons here were conducted all day with up to 20 turning up, babies and all. All the girls, mothers, Alexander and Bennett were a pleasure to teach the enthusewing team 4siasm to learn is amazing. But being with the children at Lela on Sunday afternoons was a highlight; mending their clothes was a challenge as we had to unpick their efforts of keeping their clothes together, and zips.. we have never replaced so many! Sarah became our button girl. Sadly after 3 months with the most amazing people I have meet - Zac, Teresa, Sammy, Christine, Monica, Ruth, Esther, Mary, Elissa, Joseph, Mary, Peter, Michael, Wilgibbson, Augustine, Justus, Annette - just to name a few (that’s without the young people and kids who love their God with all their hearts, souls and minds) our time had come to go home, but God Willing if Christ has delayed we will return.
